Freaky

Yes, this is an icicle. Just one. It appeared in our birdbath a couple days ago the morning after a rain (yes...it actually rained here in the Desert Southeast). No, the picture isn't upside down. You can tell by the "deer" in the background, actually our weim Pearl. If you look closely, it almost looks like it has a head and shoulders (OMG...a Virgin M?, tongue firmly embedded in cheek). This happened  I'm sure there is a perfectly logical explanation for this phenom. The temp that night took a steep dive...say a 15 degree drop in the time it took us to walk the dogs around 10ish. But just one stalicemite? Freaky.

Hi Lynn,

The science geek in me feels compelled to explain. This is from the physics department of University of Toronto.

"The short explanation is this: as the ice freezes fast under supercooled conditions, the surface can get covered except for a small hole. Water expands when it freezes. As freezing continues, the expanding ice under the surface forces the remaining water up through the hole and it freezes around the edge forming a hollow spike. Eventually, the whole thing freezes and the spike is left."

Sorry, it's an occupational hazard.

Alright, Stepahie. I knew somebody would know. I thought it had to do with the rapid drop in temp. But the danged thing was 4 inches high! L

Hey, Lynne. Sorry to intrude on the ice discussion, but...I'm new to your blog. Your book on sweaters is the bees' knees. I'm trying to find out about future workshops, particularly on designing knitwear--can you post or email me?

Leave me your email and I will contact you.

I'm glad Stephanie posted the explanation before I embarrassed myself by giving my own.

We see this a lot of them in Florida :0
